HOW DO I IDENTIFY GENUINE BREEDERS?

Unfortunately, there are many "kitten scams" and "kitten farms" in Australia that try to leverage the popularity of the ragdoll breed for their financial advantage. Avoiding such breeders is an important step in ensuring you get a healthy, ethically bread kitten. The points listed below are a good litmus test to use when speaking to breeders:

1) They provide pedigree certificates for their kittens. Unethical breeders and certain pet stores will make excuses to get around this. Things like "they don't need a pedigree because they are pets" are not legitimate reasons. The only way to be certain that you are adopting a genuine ragdoll is if they come with a certified pedigree. Pedigrees can be certified by cat associations such as ANCATS (https://www.ancats.com.au/index.html#about_us) and NSW Cat Fancy (http://www.nswcfa.asn.au/).

2) They provide proof of DNA tests of the kitten's parents (negative for PKD & HCM)

3) They are happy to answer questions, share information about their breeding program, and are committed to being transparent about their breeding practices.

4) They let you visit their cats and kittens before asking for a deposit

WHAT ARE PEDIGREE CERTIFICATES AND WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT ?

Pedigree papers can be thought of as the birth certificate of a cat. They are essentially a family tree of a cat showing at least three to five generations of family history. They are the only reliable way to prove that a cat is purebred. Not only do pedigree papers show lineage but they also show the credentials of your cat's ancestors, such as how successful they were at shows and any titles they were awarded.

When owners look at pedigree papers they are not just looking at a piece of paper, but a piece of history. The cats that lived, and ultimately led to the kitten they are holding today! In Australia, the oldest genuine, authentic, and globally recognised pedigree papers, are those issued by Australian National Cats Inc (ANCATS), established in 1984.

WHY IS DNA TESTING OF THE KITTENS PARENTS IMPORTANT?

The establishment of any breed is done through a process known as 'selective breeding'. This is when the breeder chooses individuals with a desired trait to produce offspring. A distinct breed is established when this process is repeated to select a set of traits over many generations. This practice of selective breeding however introduces challenges in managing good genetic variability and health in a population. This is because unhealthy genes can also accumulate as a byproduct of selecting certain characteristic traits of a breed. This risk is mitigated by testing the breeding parents for good genetic health. All our breeding cats, therefore, come with a certificate of genetic health that clears them for PKD and HCM genes which are prevalent in unprofessionally bread ragdoll cats.

DO RAGDOLLS MAKE FOR GOOD FAMILY CATS ?

Yes! Ragdolls are an exceptional breed that fits into the family unit much like a dog. They are quite intelligent and will talk to you when they want to be fed or just to say hi. They have incredibly soft silky coats that rarely knot. They are very trusting and make excellent companions. Because of their gentle, affectionate, and laid-back nature, ragdolls are also perfect for families with young children.

WHAT COLOURS AND PATTERS DO YOU BREED ?

Ragdolls come in three main patterns (colorpoint, mitted & bicolour) and six main colors (seal, chocolate, blue, lilac, red, and cream). We breed all three patterns of ragdolls colorpoint, mitted & bicolour, in blue and lilac colors

WHAT ARE MINK RAGDOLLS ?

The Mink Ragdoll is a specific bloodline, or strain, that stretches back to the original cats that created the breed. The term "mink" comes from the texture of this cat's fur. Their fur feels even softer and smoother than a regular Ragdoll's. Mink Ragdoll fur also tends to be more vibrant in color than a regular Ragdoll's. And their eyes will be aqua/green rather than dark blue.

HOW MANY LITTERS DO YOU HAVE IN A YEAR ?

We breed for quality over quantity and have a maximum of four litters per year. This gives us the opportunity to shower all our kittens with the attention they deserve and this reflects in their perfect temperaments.
